Permissive parents try and do the right thing by their kids, but their parenting style means that they fall short. According to the definition from the American Psychological Association, these are the moms and dads that are warm but lax. Their failure to set firm limits, monitor children’s activities closely, or require appropriately mature behavior cultivates kids who tend to be impulsive, rebellious, aimless, domineering, and aggressive. In other words, they make for kids who don’t respond to punishment or praise and who lack respect.

With her book A Disease Called Childhood, Marilyn Wedge, Ph.D., fired a shot across the bow of parents, educators, and doctors who prescribe drugs for kids diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), calling into question the validity of the diagnosis itself. Dale Archer, M.D., agrees with a lot of what Wedge has to say about pervasive overmedication, but he has decidedly more interesting ideas on the diagnosis itself. Specifically, Archer, author of The ADHD Advantage: What You Thought Was A Diagnosis May Be Your Greatest Strength — who’s been diagnosed with ADHD himself — says that such neurodivergence is a gift that has propelled television stars, high-powered entrepreneurs, inventors, explorers, and all-star athletes to greatness.

"L.E.S. Artistes" singer Santigold has treated fans to a third cut from 99¢ entitled "Chasing Shadows." The track premiered yesterday (January 14) on Annie Mac's BBC 1 radio show and it's a bouncy, tropical-meets-carnival affair that features Santigold's signature falsetto vocals and rap-singing. The singer's been teasing her upcoming album 99¢ since November, when she first revealed its lead single "Can't Get Enough of Myself" and its plastic product-heavy artwork (the above single art is Rejuvenique™-inspired). And although she announced back in December that the album would be out on January 22, the release date has since been postponed until February 26.
